The Slovenian Business Club Zambia actively participated in the forum as a representative of the Slovenian economy in Zambia and the region. The purpose of the participation was:
– to present Slovenia as a reliable European partner in the field of sustainable development, technologies and knowledge;
– to promote Slovenian companies and identify business opportunities in the sectors of agriculture, renewable energy sources and industrial processing;
– to strengthen economic and diplomatic ties between Slovenia and Zambia;
– to establish new connections with European and Zambian institutions within the framework of the Global Gateway.

The participation strengthened Slovenia’s visibility, opened up concrete opportunities for future projects and consolidated the club’s position as a platform for connecting Slovenian and Zambian companies.

Discussions focused on the structural challenges Zambia faces in urban planning, technical standards, engineering supervision and the need to introduce sustainable and locally adapted solutions. Participants highlighted the impact of urban sprawl, the need for professional guidelines and the importance of professional associations in improving the quality of construction and design.

Presentation of the Slovenian economy

As representatives of the Slovenian economy, we presented a wide range of Slovenian competencies in the field of engineering, sustainable technologies, construction equipment and infrastructure development at the conference. Participation was an important opportunity to strengthen economic cooperation, as Slovenia played a strong role in the development of engineering, energy and construction projects in Zambia during the former Yugoslavia. Many Zambian experts and institutions still remember this well, which further opens the door to new forms of partnerships.

B2B meetings and business opportunities

During the event, we held several B2B meetings with architectural offices, engineering contractors and public institutions.
Promotion of Slovenia

The presence of the Slovenian Business Club at the event represented an important promotion of Slovenia.

As of October 1, 2022, Zambia abolished the tourist visa for the European Union, where Slovenia is also The decision to cancel the visa came about because of Zambia’s 20-year tourism strategy (2018-2038). Statistics show that tourism is currently the fastest growing economic industry in the country, earning US$1.8 billion last year. In 2018, 1,072,012 foreign tourists visited Zambia (a 6.2% increase on 2017), and 1.2 million arrivals were recorded in 2019. The vision is to make Zambia one of the most visited tourist destinations in this part of Africa. Zambia’s unique history and natural wonders are attracting attention amid a local and global surge in cultural and heritage tourism. Many African countries are striving to become and remain good hosts for tourists, investors and entrepreneurs, which can boost the employment of low-skilled workers and the economic inclusion of women and youth. In addition, African policy makers are advised to unlock competitiveness and ease of doing business in the tourism sector by developing infrastructure, including road, air and water transport, and simplifying the visa requirement. Zambia is one of the first African countries to adopt the EU tourist visa waiver to boost tourism following the Covid-19 pandemic. The performance of the sector was severely affected by the travel restrictions necessitated by the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, resulting in significant job losses. The Zambia Tourism Agency was established in 2015 to market and promote Zambia as a travel destination of choice and to regulate the tourism industry. Zambia is home to the world famous Victoria Falls, vast wildlife resources, diverse landscape, wilderness, diverse culture and national heritage, adventure activities and more. In the 2020 national budget, the government announced improved funding to support the Northern region of the country, which has a myriad of tourism offerings consisting of waterfalls, national parks and other heritage sites, as well as rich traditional ceremonies that take place every year. In his recent budget speech, the country’s president, Hakainde Hichelema, said Zambia is focused on increasing the number of foreign visitors to the country. “Tourism is big business but we haven’t marketed Zambia well in the past.” Zambia has also utilized international agents to market the country. In addition, the country continued to use missions abroad to aggressively market the destination. Zambia also participates in selected international exhibitions such as ITB Berlin, FITUR in Madrid and Vankantibuers in the Netherlands. Zabija realizes that transport links are very important, which is why it has re-introduced a national airline and reformed the visa system, and two new modern international airports have been opened, namely in the capital city of Lusaka and in the tourist center of Livingstone. Zambia has memorable tourism products with sustainable competitive advantages and quality that meets or exceeds global standards. The stunning Victoria Falls, an adrenaline-pumping swim at the edge of Victoria Falls as well as Livingstone Island, where David Livingstone first saw the falls, Lake Tanganyika in northern Zambia, which is the longest freshwater lake in the world and the largest and deepest in Africa, the largest mammal migration in the world, which takes place in the Kasanka National Park, where more than 10 million visitors gather and we could go on and on. Last but not least, Zambia is a beacon of peace and a shining example of a country that has never been at war and continues to live in harmony, having 72 different ethnic groups.

Zambia’s newly-elected president, Hakainde Hichilema, has been sworn into office after pulling off a stunning rare victory for an African opposition leader. In a general election held on August 12 Hakainde Hichilema defeated his predecessor Edgar Lungu. Hichilema defeated outgoing President Edgar Lungu by almost one million votes in his sixth attempt at becoming ruler of Zambia. The victory is the 17th opposition win in sub-Saharan Africa since 2015.

Hichilema becomes Zambia’s seventh president and his inauguration marks the third time that power has peacefully shifted to opposition parties in Zambia, cementing the country’s proud history of regular, relatively credible elections and peaceful transfers of power.

Hichilema has worked as the local CEO of and international accounting firm, from 1998 to 2006. He has been chairman and member of several companies in Zambia. Today, Hichilema is said to be the second biggest cattle rancher in Zambia and thus one of the biggest suppliers of meat to the local Zambian market.

He has the task of uniting a country of 18 million people with several political and ethnic divisions that were heightened during the election period. Zambia’s battered economy is also a top priority.

In July, we hosted Zambian entrepreneur Gregor Mwalula and Mrs. Andreja Mwalula. They both live and work in the Republic of Zambia, but are closely related to Slovenia, since they are of Slovene origin. They outlined their business paths and shared experiences with their participants about life and work in this part of Africa.
Gregor presented information on the current situation in the business area, and in particular in the newly developing market for renewable resources in the Republic of Zambia. As a stable country in the region, Zambia is committed to maximizing its use, and this is also a great business opportunity for foreign companies. The government and local companies are actively seeking investors for various renewable energy projects, especially for electricity generation.
Mrs. Andrea Mwalula, in addition to her life course, presented her mission in the field of education. She dedicated her life’s mission to educating sick children and young people. She also founded the Twende Foundation, which provides education for hospitalized children and others who have difficulty attaining their primary education.
More than 20 representatives of Slovenian companies attended the business meeting at the ICPE Center in Ljubljana.
At the event, we outlined plans for an autumn business delegation to the Republic of Zambia and also started accepting applications.
